Since the surprise release of Behringer WING to Malaysia market in early 2020, we have numerous questions on the capabilities and differences between Behringer WING and Allen & Heath SQ Series, particularly the SQ6 model. Is Behringer WING better than Allen & Heath SQ6? Is Allen & Heath SQ6 better than WING? Well, there is no straight forward answer for this as it will be down to individual preferences and needs. AV Electronics Marketing is the Behringer distributor in Malaysia. Although Allen & Heath is the competitor in Malaysia market, we intend to keep things neutral as both brands produce good mixing console. In this articles, we shall present you 11 reasons WING beats SQ. Of course, we leave the articled xx reasons why Allen & Heath SQ beats Behringer WING to be written by their local distributors or the brand itself to. Let starts, shall we?

One of the most obvious difference is the size of the touch screen. Behringer WING come with a 10” capacitive touchscreen that provide comfortable viewing experience. Furthermore the screen is in high resolution, making the viewing much more clearer and pleasing to the eyes. Meanwhile the Allen & Heath SQ come with 7” touchscreen. If you need a larger screen from Allen & Heath, you need to go for their Avantis.

Behringer WING have an awesome touchscreen. To make it more fantastic, how about an adjustable display? Yes, the WING 10” touchscreen display angle can be adjusted accordingly. So you love to sit while mixing? No problem, the display can be adjusted to suits your sitting angle. You stands while mixing? Yes, you can adjust it to your viewing angle. In comparison, the Allen & Heath SQ has a fixed angle which mean, there is only one location that has the best viewing angle.

At instant glance, both mixers are tagged as 48 channel mixing console. But if you inspect further, you will notice that Behringer WING is a 48 stereo channels mixing console while Allen & Heath SQ is a 48 input channels mixing console. A stereo signal need 2 inputs; one for left and one for the right. This means basically Behringer WING is a 96 inputs channel mixing console.  Let’s put into another perspective; if we have one stereo input from the keyboard instrument, WING only occupies one channel while SQ occupies 2 channels.

In the world of mixing, the recording capability is as important as the mixing itself as there is the need to remaster later in the post production or even a multitrack playback for further fine tuning. The WING give you the option to record via USB Pendrive, USB Audio and SD Card. SQ has lesser option where it let you record via USB Audio and USB Pendrive. The WING let you to record/playback full 48x48 from the USB Audio and SD Card. SQ allows you 32x32 recording/playback with their USB Audio. Going one step further, the WING let you record up to 64x64 via the dual SD Card slot, WING LIVE. The pendrive record/playback for WING is either 4-track or stereo while SQ has the ability to record/playback stereo or 16-track.

The powerful processing of the WING is one highlight feature of the console.  For 40 stereo channel, there are 5 variable plug-in slots. The 5 variable are EQ, Gate, Compressor, Insert 1 and Insert 2. Don’t like the WING built-in processing? No problem, there are plenty of plugins from these 5 variables to be chosen from. These plugins are high quality plugins such as iconic vintage analog equalizers and compressors. Allen & Heath SQ has plugins for EQ, Gate, Compressor and one Insert. However, all plugins does not available out of box.

Behringer WING capable of 16 FX Slot. That’s a double # of Allen & Heath SQ. On top of that, 8 out of the 16 FX slot can be used for premium FX which features emulation of world class TC algorithms, Lexicon, Quantec and EMT.

Back to pint #5, in Allen & Heath SQ, in order to get these plugins, you need to fork up more cash to buy it. WING’s plugins are given completely free and more will added in future firmware update.

WING input channel’s parametric EQ has a 6 band PEQ. SQ has 4 band PEQ.  On the bus, WING has 8 band PEQ while SQ has 4 band PEQ. These additional 2 PEQ at the channels and 4 PEQ at the bus are a real handy things to have especially in a demanding situation. WING on top of the standard EQ, there is a secondary page where additions filter such as Low Cut, High Cut, Tilt EQ and All Pass Filter can be used on the particular channel. And it does not stop here; WING give you another 3 band PEQ on the bus-tap-point where give you more flexibility to mix differently to the bus.

Behringer WING provides 28 stereos output bus for ultimate routing capability. Of the 28 output busses, 16 are stereo mix busses, 8 are stereo matrix busses and 4 main stereo busses.  In contrast, the SQ has 16 stereo busses and 4 ono FX mix bus.

Behringer WING generously provide dual 6 segment LEDs metering on every channels and busses. The 6 segment LEDs metering provide a very accurate presentation of the signal status. Allen & Heath SQ only provide 2 LEDs. One LED for signal metering via different color and another LED for peak monitoring.

The WING has a very interesting section within the board itself. At this section, there are 50 LEDs to shows channel information and routing. In addition, there are  three 8 segments LED to view signal metering and compression. This abundance of LEDs and metering allows instant information at simple glance. Meanwhile, for SQ, these information need to be access from the screen menu.

Well that the 11 reasons Behringer WING beats Allen & Heath SQ.

OK, but what about the 96kHz sampling rate?
48 kHz has a Nyquist frequency of 24 kHz. This mean the highest frequencies stored in recording or processing is around 24 kHz. And human hearing range is from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.

96 kHz has a Nyquist frequency of 48 kHz which the frequencies is well beyond human hearing. Does 96 kHz sounds better than 48 kHz? Yes, No and Maybe. In fact, the biggest factor of a sound quality are the performance of the Analog-Digital-Converter within the mixing console.
